Hypersexuality

One of taboo the symptoms of bipolar disorder, hypersexuality is rarely talked about. It mostly occurs as a feature of hypomania and mania, but it can also be experienced during episodes of depression.

Hypersexuality can be a very dangerous and destructive symptom. Sufferers, like me, can often put ourselves in risky situations, and make poor decisions that have consequences on our health and relationships. It can make us do things we would not normally do, from the embarrassing to the shameful

Defined by the Mayo clinic as

An intense focus on sexual fantasies, urges or behaviours that can’t be controlled. This causes distress and problems for your health, job, relationships or other parts of your life.”

Fantasies, urges and compulsive behaviours beyond your control can become a constant focus in your life, cause distress, and create problems in your relationships.

Compulsive sexual behaviours can include:

  • Pornography
  • Excessive masturbation
  • Multiple partners
  • Paying for sex

If you suffer with hypersexuality it is important to reach out for help. Do not be embarrassed or ashamed. You are not alone. It is more common than you think. Talk to your doctor or mental health nurse, they will have heard it all before. If left untreated hypersexuality can get worse.

There are therapies that can help treat compulsive behaviours, such as DBT, that can help control sexual urges.

The best piece of advice I can give:

FORGIVE YOURSELF
