Bipolar is a mental illness, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have symptoms that effect our bodies.
These symptoms can be warning signs of a mood episode. It is worth observing and learning what these symptoms are for you and what they mean. Your mood diary is a great place to record and track these symptoms.
The following are the physical symptoms that I experience with bipolar. Yours may be different.
Physical Symptoms of Depression
- Lethargy
- Fatigue
- Exhaustion
- Sleeping too much

- Night Sweats
- Insomnia

- Heavy limbs – Clumsy
- Aches and Pains
- Headache
- Changes in appetite
Physical Symptoms of Mania & Hypomania
- Insomnia
- Not feeling the need to sleep
- Extra energy – Not feeling tired
- Muted pain response
- Hot – Sweating

- No appetite
- Restlessness
- Itchy – Tingly – Crawling skin

- Unable to keep still – Leg tapping – Jerky movements
- Rapid Speech
- Large pupils – Sparkly eyes
- Clumsiness
